The minimum applies per production batch in the consignment. Smaller batches are not checked at the border, but IJHARS can still check the product later on the Polish market.

The importer notifies the regional IJHARS office (form SWW05, also online through PUESC). IJHARS checks documents, labelling and packaging and may take samples; there is no fee unless the product fails.

Sanepid: food safety

Fish is not on the Sanepid list: it is a product of animal origin, checked by the veterinary inspection.

Every consignment: approved country and plant, official health certificate, CHED-P in TRACES, check at an EU border control post (in Poland e.g. Gdańsk, Gdynia).

Also check

Wild-caught fish needs a catch certificate in the EU CATCH system (mandatory since 10 January 2026).
Only listed species may be sold as “sardines” or “tuna” (EU marketing standards).
